In defiance of  every known copyright law, bootleg recordings of Alan Clayson have been circulating since 1977. These contain principally in-concert items and others taped with the expected variable sound quality from radio performances.

Three of the most recent are:-

MATINEE (CD)

Most of a concert at Dimbola Lodge, Freshwater, The Isle of Wight on the afternoon of Thursday 19th September 2000. Alan (voice, 12-string guitar, keyboards, mouth-organ, special effects) is accompanied by Dick Taylor (electric guitar) and, towards the end, renowned music biographer Brian Hinton (piano).  As well as selections from What A Difference A Decade Made and Soiree,  The set includes 'The Man Of The Moment', no less than three Pretty Things numbers, a version of the cabaret standard 'Perfidia' - and world premieres of 'The Last Show On Earth' and 'Weapon' as well as the hitherto unreleased 'Aetheria' and 'The Prettiest Girl';

GHOSTLY TALKING HEADS (CD)

From the same source as MATINEE comes this mixed bag embracing the missing ten minutes of the Isle of Wight show and Alan's headlining spot at Southampton's Talking Heads club on Halloe'en Night, Tuesday 31 October 2000. Some say that every night is Halloe'en night with Clayson, but on this one, he's backed by Fran Wood for a set consisting of 'Aetheria', 'The Mountains Of The Moon', 'Weapon', 'St. Patrick's Breastplate' (instrumental), 'Pagan Mercia', 'Johnny Remember Me', 'The Moonlight Skater' and 'Rebel Rocker' as well as continuity germain to the occasion.

      The final half-hour is filled with Clayson and the Argonauts' recital on BBC Radio One's In Concert at the Paris Theatre, London on 17 September 1977. Alan and the lads deliver 'Dear Lori', 'Only The Outcasts', 'Earthworms', 'On The Street Where You Live', 'The Rake's Progress', 'Fur Elise' and 'You Really Got Me'.

BOOTLEGGED

MESSTHETICS #7: UK '78-82 "D.I.Y." BANDS: "C" (Hyped To Death H2D#55)  www.hyped2death.com

This is a border-line case in that permission was sought to use a Clayson number on this twenty-four track compilation from the USA of 'homemade wonders from the golden age of DIY and indie post-punk'. Whether any royalties will be  paid remains to be seen.

Yeah, well...amongst items by the likes of The Crash Action Winners, Cold War and The Clockwork Criminals (no, I don't know who they are either), we have 'Superman '42' by (Alan) Clayson and the Argonauts, lifted directly from the vinyl of 1982's Last Respects EP - on which it seques into 'Rue Morgue'. On this pressing, however, it fades after the opening line ('What a difference a decade made...') of the latter song.  Further information: chuckw2@mindspring.com
