In
1994, alan and Twinkle were hired as "personalities" for the opening
night of an Essex night club called the Thaxted Cavern. Alan and I duly arrived at the lovely old Swan Hotel in Thaxted and I could hardly believe my eyes as we were escorted from the authentically panelled, rather grand, reception area down a few steps into the cellar to suddenly find ourselves in the heart of Liverpool’s Mathew Street. Video screens bombarded us with Sixties footage of The Beatles and many other well—known Mersey groups. A
local band called The Wrinklies entertained us with our favourite Sixties hits
and the atmosphere was so authentic that I half expected a young Priscilla White
to jump up and sing ‘Love Of The Loved’. The
climax of the evening came early when Alan Clayson joined the band for a
brilliant version of ‘Gloria’ and brought the house to its’ knees. The
energy and charisma of this performer has to be seen to be believed and I can
honestly say that, having worked with The Rolling Stones at their peak, Alan
makes Mick Jagger look about as dynamic as Mary Whitehouse! I
was a bit dubious having to follow this ‘extravaganza’ but pleasantly
surprised to find a great crowd of young people, all dressed in genuine Sixties
gear, cheering me on. We were made very welcome by the owner and all the staff
at the Swan and I can honestly say that we had a wonderful evening. The Thaxted
‘Cavern’ is definitely THE club for me! reproduced with thanks from "The Beat Goes On"
